A unique event in the history of cricket: Angelo Mathews was ‘timed out’, A first-of-its-kind event has taken place in the 146-year history of international cricket. Sri Lankan all-rounder and former captain Angelo Mathews was ‘timed out’ for not reaching the wicket in time.

Angelo Mathews became the first player to be timed out in international cricket during the World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.

According to the law, the new batsman has to reach the wicket within three minutes after the fall of the wicket, but Angelo Mathews failed to do so and was declared timed out.

According to the details, Mathews’ helmet strap broke as soon as he came out to bat. While they were waiting for a replacement, Shakib appealed and Mathews was dismissed.

Once Shakib-ul-Hasan decided to uphold the verdict, there was nothing the umpires could do. Mathews came in to bat after Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Sudira Samara Wickrama. Sudira Samara Wickrama scored 41 runs off 42 balls.

According to the MCC rule book, the batsman has to reach the wicket within three minutes, if the batsman fails to do so, the incoming batsman will be out, timed out.

This has only happened six times in first-class cricket before and is the first time it has happened in international cricket.
