The Pakistani-origin UAE star Muhammad Wasim created history in international cricket

UAE Star captain Mohammad Wasim became the first cricketer to hit 100 international sixes in a year. The feat came after hitting three sixes in the second T20I against Afghanistan on 31 December.

Muhammad Wasim cleared Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmed at deep midwicket, sending the ball onto the roof of the Sharjah Cricket Stadium for his 100th six of the year.

He added another six to his tally at the end of 2023 to set the record for most over boundaries in a year with 101 sixes. Close behind is India captain Rohit Sharma, who took the next three positions on the list with 80 sixes in 2023, 78 in 2019, and 74 in 2018. Suryakumar Yadav also registered 74 sixes in 2022.

Unlike Rohit, Muhammad Wasim only competes in two formats. As an opening batsman, he scored 1645 runs at an average of 35.76 in 47 T20Is and ODIs by the end of the year.

In T20Is exclusively, he hit 54 sixes in 23 games, the second most in a year after Suriya’s 68 in 2022. Notably, Suriya and Muhammad Wasim, occupy the top five spots in this list.

In ODIs, Muhammad Wasim hit 47 sixes with 24 sixes, the fifth most sixes by a batsman in a calendar year and the record for most sixes by an Associate Nation.

As for the second T20I match, Wasim’s aggressive start of 53 runs off 32 balls, which included four fours and three sixes, along with Aryan Lakra’s 63 runs helped the hosts to a total of 166 runs, batting first. I played an important role.

In reply, Afghanistan continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, slipping from 62-2 to 99-6, with Mohammad Nabi stranded at one end. With 12 runs needed off two balls, Nabi was dismissed for 47 off 27 balls, resulting in his team losing by 11 runs.

UAE has made a strong comeback in the series after losing the first match. With the series at stake, they will be optimistic about their chances of winning the decider on January 2.
