The Sri Lankan spin bowler broke a 71-year-old record in Test cricket, Sri Lankan spin bowler Parbat Jayasuriya created history by becoming the fastest spinner to take 50 Test wickets in the second match of the two-match series against Ireland in Galle on Friday, April 28.

The 31-year-old also became Sri Lanka’s fastest bowler with 50 Test wickets, joining legends like Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vas, and Rangana Herath.

The milestone was achieved when Parbat took the wicket of Irish opener Paul Stirling in the 26th over of his second innings. He took his 50th wicket in his seventh match to overtake West Indian Alf Valentine as the fastest spinner and the second overall record in Test cricket history.

Parbat Jayasuriya took five wickets in the first innings, his sixth, to help Lincoln Lions bowl out Ireland for 492 runs. Proclamation with a lead of 212.

The slow left-arm spinner has had a brilliant start to his red-ball career, with a bowling average of 22.90, including a 12-wicket haul against Australia on Test debut in Galle.

His heroics helped Sri Lanka level the two-match series against Australia, earning him the Player of the Match award on his debut.
