Real Madrid Andriy Lunin equals Thibaut Courtois’ UCL record

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andre Lonin was at his best during Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash against RB Leipzig as Los Blancos won the match 1-0.

Brahim Diaz’s lone goal was the difference between the two sides as the Whites recorded a hard-fought victory at the Red Bull Arena Leipzig stadium.

Real Madrid struggled against the home side and were on the back foot for the majority of the match. Leipzig launched attack after attack but all their efforts were wasted by Lonen, who according to head Carlo Ancelotti produced his best game in a Madrid shirt.

Real Madrid match in the UCL

Lonnen made nine saves against Leipzig, the most in a single Real Madrid match in the UCL. He equaled Courtois’ record for most saves in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool.

“Lennon played a fantastic game tonight,” Ancelotti said after the match. “This has been Lunon’s best game since I’ve known him.”

Brahim replaces Jude Bellingham who picked up a knock during the La Liga match against Girona. The 24-year-old has been in superb form this season and has once again stepped up in the big moments.

Ancelotti praised the Spaniard for his outstanding performance and said he has known him for a long time.

“Brahim? I see him stronger after his spell at AC Milan. He always helps the team whenever he plays. He scored a great goal tonight. We have to highlight his game,” Carlo said.

The Italian then spoke about the match, believing the team could have scored more goals.

We are happy but we could have scored more. We could also agree, so we left satisfied. It’s just a small advantage,” said Ancelotti.

“We are surviving after all the injuries in defense because all the players help in defense. Midfielders, winger…all of them.”

The return tie for the UCL tie is in Spain on March 6.
